Danny Sancomb | Perimeter Play and Skill Development to Control the Game | Nike Basketball Clinic | Championship Productions

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

with Danny Sancomb,
Wheeling Jesuit University Head CoachDanny Sancomb’s teams are known for pushing the basketball and getting quality shots within the first 6 seconds of the shot clock. This DVD provides both ball handling and shooting drills that will allow players to improve their offensive skills on the perimeter.

Ball Handling Drills
Coach Sancomb kicks off the workout by discussing his philosophy for perimeter play, which flows into stationary ball handling drills that incorporate tossing a racquet ball up and down all the while keeping the head up and the dribble going. Players maintain the dribble while tossing the racquet ball back and forth with their partner. Reinforcing ball handling skills, Sancomb introduces his “moves on the move” drill where players execute a variety of dribble moves down the middle of floor, all while using as few a number of dribbles as possible.

Shooting
Sancomb’s shooting drills feature:

  • 5 -Spot Pro Hop Drill – trains players to utilize the pump fake before driving and scoring as they avoid the charge.
  • Flip and Shield Drill – incorporates moving without the ball and setting up the defender
  • Curl and Fade Drill – emphasizes the curl off of the screen and the fade to the corner to create space
  • Getting Into The Lane Drill – features the jump stop and pivoting in the lane to find open teammates or score
  • 2-on-1 Drill – players burst out with a speed dribble and take the ball right at the defense in a 2-on-1 attack mode
  • 2-minute Shooting Drill – four players attempt to make 28 shots in 2 minutes
