Basketball Plays | Derrick Rose Chicago Bulls Play by Adam Short

Written by Coach Peterman

I have coached at the NCAA Division 2 (Southwestern Oklahoma State University), NAIA (USAO), and JUCO Levels (Blinn College and Carl Albert State College) as well as high school. I just felt that fellow coaches especially young coaches need to constantly work on their “game”. Just like the basketball players that we coach. We as coaches need to improve ourselves. That is my story and why I do this blog.

ROSE

“Rose” is an effective play that will either get your 1 man a jump shot or your 5 man a layup at the basket.  The play starts off by the 1 man passing the ball to the 4 man.  The 4 man must step over the top of his man to get the pass.  If the 4 man fails to do so, his defender might be able to deflect the basketball.  It is the 1 man’s job to hit the 4 when he is open.  The 4’s first look is the point cutting to the basket.  Many defenders do a poor job of jumping to the ball; if the point does a good job of setting up his man, he will have a layup.  If the point does not have a layup, he will set a back screen for the 5.  This puts the point guards defender is in a tough position.  If the point guard sets a great back screen and the point’s defender doesn’t help, the 5 will have a wide open layup.  If the point’s defender helps on the 5, the point will have a shot around the free-throw line. If the 4 can’t hit the center because the point guard’s man helped, the 4 will dribble towards the point for a dribble handoff.  It is important for the 4 after the handoff to turn and seal his defender.  The 4’s defender is the only one that could contest the shot.  When running this play, coaches need to explain to their point guard they will be getting a jump shot off this play.  They cannot attack off the dribble because their defender who was once helping on the 5 will be able to take an angle and cut off their penetration.  This is a great play to run when your point has hit a few shots early in the game.  It puts his defender in a tough position.  Coaches, your team will either get a layup or a wide open jump shot.  The point guard’s defender has a tough decision to make.
