Billy Donavan – Florida Gator uptempo offense
Nike Coaches clinic
This clinic was from a few years ago but Coach Donavan has many good concepts about the transition offense that the Florida Gators like to run. Some of the notes deal with player development to build the players to fit the system, and other notes are more specific to the team.
I Individual Workouts
A. Drills
1. Always have the players pass – they will be passing in the game
2. Shoot & Move
*Balance is the key
*Ball Fakes, (shot fake), Ball quick – tight circle
* Rip through
* Change of direction – get defense off balance
3. Chart: Attempts, Makes, Percentage (great way to include students).
4. Shooting: 300 shots a day; 1200 shots a week
* Big men 15ft
* Guards from 3 pivot off of inside foot
5. Make every drill competitive – chart shooting (whole team)
6. He uses a 3 on 2 drill to work on offensive players penetrating into the lane and are looking for either a layup or a kick out for 3
B. Fundamentals
1. Rip through is used when defender is belly up
*Penetrate
* Look to draw the foul
* Don’t shy away from the contact
2. Change of direction
* Rip through 1 dribble
* Change speeds, change direction
“ Great players play in the middle of the floor”
II Building your system
A. Sell your system to your team
1. Get people to buy what you’re selling
2. Coach Donavan has a theme every day in practice
3. Pride in individual offensive improvement
*1/2 hr a day
“If your parts are better, then the whole is better”
B. What your players want
1. Build Trust – work with players individually
2. Reasons kid play – motivate what makes them tick
*Love – very few love the game
*Fame – Looks great, many don’t want to work that hard
* Fortune – Everyone wants the money
